Open Cloud Standards or Vendor Lock-in

1/22/2010

Darren Wesemann has a new blog post: Vint Cerf (Father of the Internet) is calling for standards in the cloud in an interview with InfoWorld (see the whole interview here). I enjoy following Vint’s logic whenever he imparts it, as it’s usually spot on.

Remember how hard it used to be to change wireless carriers? Enter number portability and interoperability between carriers for exchanging provision/termination information and the result is a few minutes on the phone with the change almost immediately. Not that changing wireless carriers is something we want to do all the time, but the standards that made switching possible also bring other useful features to light, such as better customer service, accountable behavior from the carrier and open competition for features, all competing for your business because they don’t have the complacency derived from the proprietary lock-in of the past.

SunGard Higher Education Customers Win 2009 Digital Education Achievement Award

11/18/2009

Abilene Christian University and Fashion Institute of Technology Recognized for Innovations in Digital Technology

SunGard Higher Education congratulates customers honored in the 2009 Center for Digital Education Achievement Awards. The awards showcase outstanding educational venues in higher Education, K-12 state and local districts, portals and Web sites based on their innovations, functionality and efficiencies.

Abilene Christian University was recognized in the Learning and Engagement category for its ACU Connected system that utilized mobile technology, changing the way students live, work and learn at ACU. As the first university to distribute Apple iPhones and iPod Touches to incoming freshman, ACU created an innovative platform where students could instantly receive homework alerts, answer school surveys and quizzes, get directions to professors’ offices and check meal and account balances in and out of the classroom.

In addition to earning the 2009 Digital Education Achievement Award for improving education through mobile technology, Abilene Christian University was named one of America’s Best Colleges for the second year in a row by U.S. News and World Report in its 2010 edition. The university climbed up the rankings to 20th in the category of Master’s Universities – West.

The Fashion Institute of Technology was recognized in the Sustainability category for its ePortfolio for College Submissions. Before the award-winning online submission system, potential students had limited options for portfolio review, through mail or personal submission. With ePortfolios, students can submit their work online from anywhere in the world. The system simplified scheduling, student checklists and grading. Over 125 ePortfolio were submitted, and of those, 30% received admission.

ACU Connected and the Fashion Institute of Technology’s ePortfolios are powered by the SunGard Higher Education Banner. SunGard was privileged to join in supporting the nominations.
